PSA vs CGC for Pokémon Cards — Which Grading Service Should You Choose in 2026?
If you've ever held a clean Pokémon card and wondered whether it's worth sending in for grading, you've also asked the next question: PSA or CGC? Both are legitimate, both add value, and both come with very different tradeoffs depending on what you're grading and why.
This guide compares the two grading services head-to-head — turnaround time, pricing, market premium, label design, population reports — and tells you exactly which to pick for vintage WOTC cards, modern Scarlet & Violet pulls, sealed booster packs, and chase Special Art Rares.
The short answer
For vintage WOTC and Base Set-era Pokémon cards (1999–2003): PSA. The market premium for a PSA 10 vintage card is significantly higher than the equivalent CGC 9.5 or CGC 10, and most serious vintage collectors register their collections through the PSA Set Registry.
For modern Scarlet & Violet, Mega Evolution, or Japanese cards: CGC, especially if you can hit the CGC 10 Pristine tier. CGC's stricter grading scale and the elite Pristine designation often command higher prices than PSA 10s for the same card in the modern era.
For sealed booster packs: CGC. They've become the preferred grader for sealed product encapsulation — collectors trust their slab construction for long-term sealed-pack preservation.
The rest of this guide explains why the answer differs by category, and how to make the call for your specific card.
PSA — the legacy standard
Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) has been grading collectibles since 1991 and is the most recognizable name in the hobby. When most people think "graded Pokémon card," they picture a PSA red label.
Strengths:
- Highest brand recognition. Casual buyers trust PSA labels. Resale liquidity is excellent.
- The PSA Set Registry. A massive online community where collectors compete to assemble the highest-grade complete sets. PSA 10 cards score the maximum points.
- Premium for vintage. PSA 10 holos from Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, and other WOTC-era sets routinely sell for 30–80% more than the same card in CGC 10.
- Population reports. PSA's pop reports are the de facto standard the market uses to value rarity.
Weaknesses:
- Inconsistent turnaround times. PSA's standard tier can take 60+ business days. Express tiers exist but cost significantly more (sometimes $300+ per card).
- Stricter on centering and surface. PSA's grading curve is harder than CGC's, and many cards that would qualify for a CGC 10 land at PSA 9.
- Higher submission cost. Base tier starts around $25 per card and rises sharply for higher-value cards.
CGC — the modern era's favorite
Certified Guaranty Company (CGC) entered Pokémon TCG grading in 2020 and has rapidly become the preferred grader for modern cards, sealed product, and any collector who wants the elite CGC 10 Pristine designation.
Strengths:
- Faster turnaround. Standard tier typically clears in 25–40 business days — significantly faster than PSA.
- The CGC 10 Pristine grade. A tier above CGC 10 Gem Mint, awarded to perfectly centered, flawless cards. Pristine cards command premiums similar to or above PSA 10s.
- Subgrades on request. CGC offers optional subgrades (centering, corners, edges, surface) so you can see exactly why a card landed at the grade it did.
- Better at sealed booster packs. CGC's slab is widely considered the safest for long-term sealed pack storage.
- Lower base cost. Standard tier starts around $20 per card.
Weaknesses:
- Less brand recognition outside the hobby. Casual eBay buyers still default to PSA.
- Lower vintage premium. A CGC 10 Base Set Charizard sells for less than a PSA 10 — the spread can be tens of thousands of dollars at the top end.
- Set Registry is smaller. CGC's competing registry exists but doesn't have the same community gravity as PSA's.

Which should you pick — by card category
Vintage WOTC era (1999–2003) → PSA
If you have a Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, Gym Heroes/Challenge, Neo Genesis, Neo Discovery, Neo Revelation, or Neo Destiny card in clean condition, send it to PSA. The market premium more than covers the higher submission cost and longer wait.
EX era and DP/HGSS era (2003–2011) → PSA, CGC acceptable
The vintage premium starts to fade. PSA still wins by 20–40% on most cards, but CGC's faster turnaround and lower cost can make sense for bulk grading.
Black & White through Sun & Moon (2011–2019) → CGC
By the BW era, CGC's market premium is essentially equal to PSA's. CGC's faster turnaround and Pristine grade tip the scale in CGC's favor.
Sword & Shield, Scarlet & Violet, Mega Evolution (2020–today) → CGC
Modern Pokémon TCG grading has shifted firmly toward CGC. A CGC 10 Pristine chase card from the Mega Evolution era often sells for more than the equivalent PSA 10.
Japanese Pokémon cards (any era) → CGC
CGC dominates this category by volume thanks to their understanding of Japanese set codes and willingness to grade SAR/AR at the Pristine tier.
Sealed booster packs → CGC
Their pack-specific slab is sturdier and the market trusts it more for long-term holds.
Cost-vs-return math
A practical rule of thumb: only grade cards where the expected post-grade value is at least 4x the submission cost.
- $20 CGC submission → card needs to be worth $80+ graded
- $25 PSA submission → card needs to be worth $100+ graded
Where to buy already-graded Pokémon cards
If you'd rather skip the wait, SEIM COLLECTS stocks both PSA and CGC graded singles — vintage WOTC, modern Scarlet & Violet Special Art Rares, Mega Evolution promos, and Japanese SARs. Every slab is authenticated, the cert number is visible, and packaging is built for graded slabs.

The bottom line
For vintage WOTC, PSA still wins on resale premium. For everything modern, sealed, or Japanese, CGC has the edge — especially with the Pristine tier. Pick based on what you're grading, not which name sounds more familiar.
